Mistley Secret Bunker

WW1 Air Raid Shelter, Southchurch Lawn

During WW1, from 1914 – 1918 and WW2 from 1939 – 1945 (1947/8 in other parts of the world), a huge number of specialised, temporary, prefabricated buildings were designed and erected at short notice. More surprising is that many of these rapidly developed buildings still exist and can be put to good use. During the Cold War, many other substantial structures were built and still remain.

One of the benefits of wartime developments is that everything was documented and it is often possible to narrow down the exact type of building and even when it was put up. However, after WW2, many buildings were relocated, especially to farms, becoming part of the Listed curtilage.
