Granaries

A granary is a specific type of agricultural building used to store finished product that will have been processed in the barn or on the ground floor of the granary. They are distinguished by having heavy floor joists set close together to take the weight of the wet grain which can be up to 100 tons. Some granaries are set above stables so they can be used as haylofts. If complete, they will contain timber divisions to create bins that can be reorganised with drop slots and planks that are often numbered. Granaries are often protected from vermin by brick noggin in the walls and tin sheets in the floors or being set up on brick piers.

Another more specialised type of granary is a much smaller unit that is stood up on staddle stones to prevent rats from infesting the grain. These are often portable buildings and can be moved about the farm when necessary. They can be found in unusual places like pub carparks.
