Mills

Flour mills are essentially machines for converting grain into flour by a variety of mechanisms driven by water, wind, muscle, steam or other engines. Other types of mills were used for fulling wool or creating silk, hammering metal or spinning textiles. These latter types are very rare in East Anglia.

In the past, I created exhibitions for the County owned mills at Sible Hedingham (Watermill), Mountnessing Windmill, Finchingfield Windmill, Thorrington Tidal Mill and carried out projects on Beeleigh Steam Mill, Stock Tower Mill, Abbess Roding Windmill and contributed to Geoff Wood’s book Essex Windmills in 2005.

Recording mill buildings is relatively rare as they are seldom altered, having been converted in the past.
